Trailblazer Initiative Nigeria Condemns Federal Government’s Policy Denying Secondary Students Under 18 from Writing NECO and WASSCE Exams

[Ibadan, Nigeria] — Trailblazer Initiative Nigeria (TBI) strongly condemns the Federal Government’s recent policy that prohibits secondary school students under the age of 18 from sitting for the National Examinations Council (NECO) and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). This decision represents a significant setback in the country’s educational system and undermines the right of young Nigerians to access and complete their education in a timely manner.

Education is a fundamental right, and policies that restrict access based on age are counterproductive to the nation’s developmental goals. Many students excel academically at a younger age and are prepared to advance their education. This policy not only penalizes such students but also threatens to widen the educational gap, particularly for those in underserved communities where educational opportunities are already limited.

We urge the Federal Government to reconsider this policy and instead focus on creating a more inclusive and equitable educational system that supports all students, regardless of age, in reaching their full potential.

Trailblazer Initiative Nigeria remains committed to advocating for policies that promote access to quality education for every Nigerian child.
