With support from UNICEF Nigeria, Trailblazer Initiative Nigeria (TBI) organized a 2-day orientation and capacity-building workshop for representatives of selected Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) from Oluyole, Oyo East, and Ogooluwa LGAs of Oyo State. The workshop focused on empowering these CBO representatives with the skills and knowledge needed to actively contribute to the elimination of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in their respective communities.
During the training, participants were equipped with practical tools to conduct reflective dialogues with various groups, including traditional leaders, religious heads, women’s groups, youth, and other key community influencers. These dialogues are designed to challenge existing cultural norms and beliefs that perpetuate FGM and encourage open conversations on the dangers of the practice. In addition to this, the participants were trained on effective community mobilization strategies, specifically for gathering House-to-House #Act2EndFGM pledges, which are commitments made by families and households to abandon the practice of FGM.
By the end of the workshop, the CBO representatives were empowered to take the lead in their communities, not only in conducting sensitization campaigns but also in creating safe spaces for survivors of FGM and potential victims to seek help and support. This initiative is a critical step in deepening grassroots engagement and ensuring community-driven solutions to eliminate FGM.
Through these efforts, TBI and UNICEF Nigeria are strengthening the capacity of local actors to sustain the movement against FGM, fostering a culture of human rights and gender equality across the target LGAs.
Together, we can end FGM and protect the future of girls and women in Oyo State and beyond. #Act2EndFGM
