#IntheNews: UNICEF, TBI Engage Traditional Leaders to End FGM in Oyo State

In a significant step toward ending Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Oyo State, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Trailblazer Initiative Nigeria (TBI) have partnered with traditional leaders to lead the charge against this harmful practice.

Speaking during a one-day advocacy meeting with traditional leaders from Olunde and four other communities in the Oluyole Local Government Area, the Executive Director of Trailblazer Initiative Nigeria, Dr. Dare Olagoke-Adaramoye called on community leaders and stakeholders to unite in the fight against FGM to protect the lives and futures of young girls.

Dr. Olagoke-Adaramoye highlighted the severe consequences of FGM, including chronic pain, infections, complications during childbirth, and an increased risk of death.

He stressed that the long-term physical and psychological trauma inflicted by FGM, its impact on sexual and reproductive health, and its infringement on human rights often lead to social exclusion and limited opportunities for affected girls and women.

“By working together, we can protect girls from this harmful practice, support survivors, and promote healthier futures,” he stated.

“Ending FGM will strengthen our communities, safeguard human rights, and create lasting change for generations,” he concluded.

In their separate remarks, the Balogun Baale of Olunde, Alhaji R.O. Salam, praised UNICEF and Trailblazer Initiative Nigeria for bringing this life-saving program to their community.

He said, “Our role as custodians of culture is evolving. We now see the harmful effects of FGM and are ready to protect our daughters from this cruel practice.”

The Chairman of the Olunde Community Association, Mr. Adeniyi Akingbade also expressed his readiness to collaborate with the organizations to eradicate FGM, acknowledging the dangers of the practice and the misconceptions that perpetuate it.

Other traditional leaders, including Chief Ogunremi Dauda (Osi Baale) and Faganiyu Sakimlahi (Religious Leader), encouraged TBI and UNICEF to intensify awareness campaigns.

They emphasized the importance of ensuring that all community members understand the harmful impacts of FGM and the need to dispel myths surrounding the practice.
