UNICEF, NGO Engages Influential Leaders to End FGM in Oluyole, Ogooluwa, Oyo East, and Oriire LGAs

In partnership with UNICEF Nigeria, we recently conducted a one-day advocacy meeting aimed at eliminating Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) across 20 communities in Oluyole, Ogooluwa, Oyo East, and Oriire Local Government Areas (LGAs). This meeting brought together influential leaders—community heads, religious leaders, traditional rulers, and women group representatives—from each of the communities, focusing on securing their buy-in to support the implementation of initiatives to end FGM.

Female Genital Mutilation remains a deep-rooted cultural practice in these areas, despite laws prohibiting it and the widespread health risks it poses. The advocacy meeting aimed to challenge entrenched beliefs, sensitize leaders about the harmful effects of FGM, and encourage them to use their influence to advocate for change within their communities. Through engaging discussions, these leaders shared their perspectives on FGM, allowing for a respectful exchange of ideas on how best to eradicate this harmful practice.

One of the key outcomes of the meeting was the commitment from these leaders to actively support the #Act2endFGM campaign. They pledged to raise awareness within their communities, enforce existing laws, and promote alternative rites of passage that do not involve harm to girls and women.

Our advocacy efforts aim to build a strong coalition of local influencers who will be instrumental in shifting community norms and driving long-lasting change. By working together with UNICEF Nigeria and local leaders, we are one step closer to achieving a future where girls can grow up free from the dangers of FGM.
