The tobacco industry spends billions making harmful products look attractive, especially to young people. But behind the appealing packaging, flavors, and marketing lies a devastating reality:
⚠️ Tobacco kills more than 8 million people every year worldwide.
⚠️ Thousands of Nigerians continue to suffer from tobacco-related diseases and their economic consequences.
⚠️ Families bear the burden of preventable illness, disability, and healthcare costs.
Nigeria has a National Tobacco Control Act.
Oyo State has tobacco control legislation.
The challenge is not the absence of laws. The challenge is implementation.
And implementation requires one critical ingredient: Sustainable Financing.
A dedicated Tobacco Control Budget Line is not an expense—it is an investment in:
✔ Enforcement of smoke-free laws
✔ Protection of children and youth from tobacco industry tactics
✔ Public awareness and education campaigns
✔ Tobacco cessation and rehabilitation services
✔ Monitoring, compliance, and accountability systems
Without adequate funding:
❌ Laws remain on paper
❌ Enforcement remains weak
❌ Tobacco industry interference grows unchecked
❌ Preventable diseases continue to increase
❌ Health systems bear avoidable costs
Every naira invested in tobacco control today saves lives, reduces healthcare costs, and protects future generations tomorrow.
As we mark World No Tobacco Day 2026, we call on policymakers, civil society organizations, health advocates, and communities to support sustainable domestic financing for tobacco control.
Because when tobacco control is not funded, it is not prioritized.
The question is not whether we can afford to fund tobacco control. The real question is whether we can afford not to.
